PSG vs Atletico Madrid – Player Ratings and Match Report
PSG vs Atletico Madrid was the first big clash of the FIFA Club World Cup, and it went as expected. The UEFA Champions League winners eased to a 4-0 win, with some help from the Spanish side.
Fabian Ruiz opened the scoring just seconds after Kvaratskhelia came close to scoring himself. The Spaniard latched on to a loose ball outside the box and beat Jan Oblak on his left bottom corner.
The match looked set to go into the break with just one goal, but Kvaratskhelia was at his best again and set up Vitinha for PSG’s second goal. The 2-0 scoreline made Atletico Madrid come out with all guns blazing, and they managed to pull one back just before the hour mark.
However, VAR intervened, and the goal was ruled out for a foul in the build-up. The Spanish side had another chance to pull one back, with Alexander Sørloth getting himself in the history books by becoming the first striker in the new FIFA Club World Cup format to miss an open goal from 3 yards out.
Things got worse for Atletico Madrid as Clément Lenglet got himself sent off. The defender was booked early in the game and then talked himself into a second booking in the 78th minute, resulting in his dismissal.
It went from bad to worse for Diego Simeone’s side as Mayulu beat Oblak at the near post in the 87th minute to seal the win. PSG got a penalty in the final second of injury time, and Lee Kang-In slotted it in to make it 4-0.
