Maurizio Sarri has left Kurt Zouma out of the pre-season team that has travelled to Australia. The 25-man squad included the new signing, Jorginho, and other star players who were not involved in the World Cup.

It came as a surprise to see Danny Drinkwater, who has been linked with a move away,  also travelling to Australia.

Zouma’s situation is not clear as he had signed a new long-term contract last summer. He was sent on loan to Stoke City for the whole season and he impressed despite the club getting relegated.

Meanwhile, Sarri will have to start Chelsea’s first pre-season game without a recognised first-team goalkeeper.  Thibaut Courtois and Willy Caballero were at the World Cup and have not yet linked up with the squad.

Courtois is said to be on the verge of leaving Chelsea with Real Madrid the likely destination. Reports suggest that the two sides are in active talks for the Belgian and a deal is close.
