Alexis Sanchez has been handed a 16-month prison sentence after accepting tax fraud allegations. The Chile star will not be sent to join however as any sentence below 2 years is suspended.

The new Manchester United star admitted to Spanish tax authorities of defrauding €983,443 from image rights during the 3 years he spent at Barcelona.

He has been fined £525,000 and will also repay the money to the authorities. He has to pay that tax money and interest to the Spanish authorities in the next two years.

Sanchez set up a Maltese company called Numidia Trading to avoid tax. This was done between 2012 and 2013 but was brought to light by the authorities last year.

Sanchez is not the first Barcelona player to be held for such allegations. Javier Mascherano was found guilty of doing the same crime last year and he too was handed a similar sentence.
