Gerard Pique tried to buy an English football club in the summer
Gerard Pique made a bid to buy Notts County according to The Athletic. The report states that the Barcelona star was close to the takeover but failed to complete the deal as he had no time to complete the diligence checks of the club’s financial problems.
Notts County’s former owner, Alan Hardy was keen on selling the club this summer and had several offers. However, a looming High Court date for the unpaid tax bills forced him to seal the deal with Danish brothers Alexander and Christoffer Reedtz on July 26.
Gerard Pique’s group already owns 2 football clubs
Pique’s Kosmos Global Holding reportedly held talks with Hardy in London but were not able to complete the deal in time. This is not their first move to buy a football club as they already own FC Andorra and Gimnastic Manresa.
FC Andorra was bought in December 2018 and they have already gained promotion to Segunda División B. Meanwhile, Pique’s group also took over at Gimnastic Manresa this summer, at the same time they were in talks to buy the English club.
Notts County, who play in the National League – the fifth tier of the English football league system – are the world’s oldest professional club. They are currently 7th in the table after 16 games with 24 points – 8 points behind league leaders, FC Halifax Town and 2nd placed Bromley.
