Gary Cahill heaps praise on John Terry

Gary Cahill, John Terry, Frank Lampard and David Luiz are probably the only players who have won everything during their time at Chelsea. While Terry and Lampard left long back, it’s time for another one of the elite 4 to say goodbye.

Cahill’s contract at Chelsea expires in the summer and the club have not offered him a new deal. Maurizio Sarri has not opted to play Cahill and the English defender is not happy that he hasn’t been given a reason why.

Talking about his time at Stamford Bridge in an interview with Telegraphโ€™s Matt Law, Cahill heaped praise on former Chelsea captain, John Terry. The Blues legend worked with Cahill for around 5.5 years at the club before leaving for Aston Villa.

โ€œJohn was someone I admired when I wasnโ€™t at the club and admired even more when I played and worked with him. When it was clear he was leaving, it was a bit like when Sir Alex Ferguson left Manchester United in terms of the captaincy, โ€˜whoโ€™s going to take thatโ€™? But also โ€˜whoโ€™s not going to take it?โ€™โ€ said Cahill.

โ€œJohn was great when he wasnโ€™t playing and he was still club captain and I was captaining the team. We won the title that year and I played near enough every game. I remember in the tunnel before we got the trophy, he was adamant that I should wear the armband when we lifted it together. That was a mark of what he is like.โ€

โ€œThen I took on the club captaincy after John left and thatโ€™s part of the reason why last seasonโ€™s FA Cup win was so big for me. I wanted to win it because I had missed the final with injury in my first season and I really wanted to lift the Cup with the armband on as club captain.โ€ added Cahill.

Cahill’s final home game for Chelsea will be tonight against Watford.
