Why Chelsea were smart in extending Zappacosta’s contract before AS Roma loan move

Chelsea have confirmed that Davide Zappacosta has joined AS Roma on loan until January. The Italian has signed a new deal at the Premier League side before moving back to Serie A.

The loan move for Zappacosta allows him to play regularly while for Chelsea, it gives Frank Lampard the chance to promote Reece James to the first team. While the loan move has not surprised the fans, the extension of his contract has caught a lot of them off guard.

The Blues faithful have been questioning the club’s decision but the move is ideally the best thing for Chelsea at this time. Here’s why:

Zappacosta’s contract was set to expire at the end of the 2020/21 season. With the loan deal at AS Roma ending in the summer of 2020, it would hnd ave given the Italian side a bargaining chip. With just a year left on his deal, Roma could have offered a low fee for the right-back and Chelsea would have had no option but to accept it in the end.

However, now with his deal extended by a year to 2022, Chelsea can sell him for the price they intend to and keep him in their books as well if no club is willing to meet their demands.
