Alvaro Morata opens up about disastrous Chelsea stint

Chelsea news: Alvaro Morata might be enjoying life in the Spanish capital with Atletico Madrid, but things were not always so rosy for the 27-year-old. In a recent interview with Spanish TV channel Jugones (via Marca), Morata revealed how his career took a dark turn during his time with Chelsea.

Morata joined the Blues from Real Madrid back in 2017 for a then club-record fee of ยฃ60 million but failed to cement his spot in the side over the course of the next year and a half.

The Spaniard netted just 13 times in all competitions in the 2017/18 season and his poor form meant he was overlooked by then Spain manager Julen Lopetegui for their World Cup squad.

This left Morata in turmoil and the Spaniard revealed that he was perennially depressed and unable to even leave his house at times.

โ€œI didn’t feel like doing anything, leaving home, talking to people, nothing. The only thing I had in mind was going to the World Cup, playing and being happy โ€ฆ and in the end, I was quite the opposite of happy.”

He also revealed that he was forced to consider a change in scenery in order to keep his career intact. “I did think about playing somewhere very far away, without pressure, without having to win every Sunday, without having to concentrate for matches.โ€

Atletico Madrid offered Morata a lifeline by signing him on loan in January 2019, with the deal set to become permanent in the summer. The Spaniard has grabbed the opportunity with both hands and has netted 13 times for Atletico since his arrival in January, including in each of the last six games.
