Gary Cahill has all but confirmed that he will be leaving Chelsea soon. The English defender’s contract at the club expires at the end of this season.

The former Aston Villa and Bolton defender has not made the matchday squad often under Maurizio Sarri, and he is seen as the 4th choice centre-back right now.

Chelsea saw Daniele Rugani as the ideal replacement for Cahill in the summer and spent a lot of time trying to sign him. However, Juventus and the defender rebuffed the move and Chelsea ended up signing no one.

Calcio Mercato now reports that contract talks between the defender and the Serie A side have stalled. The 24-year-old’s current deal expires in 2021 and Juve are keen on renewing with other players before Rugani.

Alex Sandro and Mario Manzukic have their contract expiring in 2020, and Calcio Mercato reports that the Old Lady are looking to seal their contract renewals first.

The break down of negotiations has given Chelsea a boost, and the Italian report suggests that the Blues will be making a move for Rugani again in January.

Calcio Mercato are a very reliable source for Serie A news. Antonio Rudiger and David Luiz have settled in well under Sarri but they will be looking to sign a long-term partner for Andreas Christensen soon.

Ethan Ampadu has played well in that position but the Welshman is better suited for the midfield role. The other option Chelsea have in Kurt Zouma but the Frenchman hasn’t impressed at Stoke City and now at Everton.
