Manchester United’s Chris Smalling to join AS Roma on loan

Manchester United united defender, Chris Smalling is set to join AS Roma on a season-long loan according to Sky Italia. The English defender is a bench warmer as Ole Gunnar Solskjรฆr has opted to go with Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof in the heart of the defence.

Roma have been on the hunt for a centre-back this summer but have failed to get their targets. They were chasing Arsenal‘s Shkodran Mustafi and Liverpool‘s Dejan Lovren but have failed to agree a deal with the respective clubs.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Roma turned to Smalling and have already found an agreement. He avows that United will get a โ‚ฌ3 million loan fee and there will be no option to buy for the Serie A side.

Smalling has also agreed to move as per the report and it looks like the deal could be concluded soon. AS Roma take on Lazio on Sunday and Paulo Fonseca will be looking to get the United loanee straight into the starting XI as they leaked 3 goals to Genoa on the opening day.

With Smalling gone, Solskjรฆr will still have enough centre-back options. The Reds have Lindelof and Maguire starting while Phil Jones is available as a substitute. Eric Bailly is also at United but is currently out injured.
