Manchester City got their Premier League season off right from where they left it. They defeated Arsenal who were playing their first competitive game without Arsene Wenger since 1996.

City took the lead in the 14th minute when Raheem Sterling cut inside and then got beyond two players, before rifling a shot home from 20 yards out.

Riyad Mahrez almost made it 2-0 on his league debut for City with a superb free-kick but it was brilliantly saved by Petr Cech. Aymeric Laporte came close from the rebound but the former Chelsea man made a stunning save to keep the score at 1-0.

Arsenal were trying hard to get back into the game and the introduction of Alexandre Lacazette for Aaron Ramsey got them close. He had a golden chance to put Arsenal level but his shot went inches wide of the post.

The Cityzens scored in the very next minute thanks a first time shot by an unmarked Bernardo Silva from 10 yards out. Manchester City held on and walked away with all three points.
